Keith's musings:
This is a very eclectic album and I think some of my best work. Hope you all agree. Make Amends and Filtered are older songs given a reworking here. Riant and Use It are based on poems by Lily and most of the others have lyrics co-written with Lily. On The Pier is a new rockier version of the song on the Splinters album. We have a little jazz feel in the likes of the title track Maybe Once You Had a Reason and Silhouette, some alt-rock in the likes of Ghost of Molly Hawkins, If I Can't Be With You and Use It, blues in YouTube Conspiracy Theory Blues and ballads such as Make Amends and Riant.

Keith's musings:
This album contains probably my most popular song to date, namely George Street which got a lot of airplay on Hastings Rock and also featured on the BBC South East music panel. Videos here for George Street, Coming Home and On The Pier:

  Keith's musings:
Most of the songs are new but I've included a couple from my back catalogue. I've aimed for a sparse understated production featuring acoustic guitar on most of the tracks.

1. Might As Well Be the Rain
(words by Keith & Lily, music by Keith)
This is a brand new song 'though it's been a work in progress for a while. I think a strong Roy Harper influence shows through on this one.

2. After All - acoustic
(words & music by Keith)
New cut-down almost unplugged version of an oldie of mine. Although it might seem like a very personal song, it really isn't. I wrote it from the perspective of someone feeling very bitter and very sorry for themselves after a break-up - over dramatising the situation etc. It took me a long time to work out a way of playing it acoustically that worked ... I hope it does.

3. Life is a Bowl of Cherries
(words & music by Keith)
Another brand new one. Kind of Steely Dan meets ... hmm ... I dunno, Surrealistic Penguin! A wannabe celebrity rails at the injustice of the world Laughing

4. The Space Between Us
(words by Alli, music by Keith)
An older one that some will remember from way back. I think it was Ren who said this fits the genre "new Americana". Alli was very dismissive of her lyric here until it was put to music. I've always liked this one but didn't feel it fitted well into the Surrealistic Penguin albums - so here, finally, it makes its CD debut.

5. A Little Peace of Mind
(words by Keith & Lily, music by Keith)
Originally written (in one hectic day, I might add) for the Aretha Franklin opp on LetsTalkMusic. Still hoping and waiting to hear her singing this one. This was my first collaboration lyrically with Lily - before we'd even met face-to-face.

6. Wake
(words & music by Keith)
Another brand new one that's been a work in progress for a while. Acoustic Pink Floyd kind of feel to this I think. Just a "lying in bed, Sunday morning, happily contemplating nothing to do" kind of song.

7. Time's Up
(words by Andi Crimmins, music by Keith)
One from the back catalogue. I wanted this to have an old 60's soul kind of feel. I did have another version with Andi's backing vox but I seem to have lost it! However I've gotten used to the more basic version here anyway.

8. After All
(words & music by Keith)
The older, fuller production version of After All. I have no idea what to say about the genre/style of this - it's not like anything I've written before or since.

9. Mexican Beer
(words by Keith & Lily, music by Keith)
Just a ditty about the joys (or not) of travelling around the world for a living.

10. No Sense At All
(words by Lily, music by Keith)
Lily's lyric was a poem originally. I still see this really as a poem set to music. Lily makes her debut vocally here speaking the countdown as the verses progress. She did try singing this but wasn't happy with it so her singing debut will have to wait for now.

What kind of music does a Surrealistic Penguin make?

"I swear I have heard these songs in some other life. Very emotionally powerful; endearing lyrics, haunting vocals, rhythms, and piano tones. Beautiful stuff!"
Teirrah Andurzen

"The melody is gorgeous...the feeling in the voice brought me to my knees ... lovely dynamics and true emotion, very powerful"
Andrea Crimmins, Now-Recording, Texas

"This is crazy talk! Crazy talk I tell you! What awesome space creature is this? Your production is in a wire, arrangement knocks sox; this sound is just what I needed."
Moah Sparks, Garageband

"Traces of Pink Floyd, Iggy & the Stooges, Bowie and Radiohead, yet not sounding like any one of them ... Great original band"
Vagabond Road, New Jersey
